Join Iowa City author Andy Douglas as he reads selections from his recently published memoirs and performs Bengali devotional songs. The Curve of the World: Into the Spiritual Heart of Yoga tells the story of the author’s relationship with a remarkable spiritual teacher on a path grounded in meditation and service. It draws connections between spirituality and social justice, music and devotion.
Andy Douglas was born in Brazil to missionary parents, and travel and spiritual practice have shaped his life ever since. He has practiced yoga and meditation for thirty years, and lived for seven years in various countries of Asia, four of those as a monk. After returning to the U. S. in 1990, he worked as a journalist and public radio announcer, before receiving a bachelors’ degree in Anthropology from the University of Iowa. In 2005, he received an MFA in Creative Writing, also from the University of Iowa, where he was the recipient of the Marcus Bach Fellowship for Writing about Religion and Culture. He is active in peace, economic justice and prison issues, and sings in a choir with prisoners. The author also translates and sings Bengali devotional songs and has recorded a CD of P. R. Sarkar’s music.
There is no admission charge for this event. Books and CDs will be available for purchase.
