Steven (Steve) Willette has been practicing yoga for sixteen years and is in his tenth year of teaching. His training began in 2001 with William Lawton Wilson, a direct student of Sri K. Pattabhi (Ashtanga), and continued with Geoffrey Earendil (Anusara Hatha), Nicki Doane and Eddie Modestini (Maya Yoga), Seane Corn (Vinyasa Flow), Tias Little (Prajna), Rama Berch (Svaroopa Yoga), Scott Blossom (Vinyasa Krama), as well as locally with Deb Lister. Steve and Sharon continue to study with and are mentored by Arielle Thomas Newman of Yoga by the Sea, Playa del Carmen, Mexico. Perhaps of greatest influence is Aadil Palkhivala (Purna Yoga). Purna means “whole” and as such, Purna Yoga is not only for the body, mind, and spirit, but also for the expanse of the Heart Center. Purna Yoga is an evolving yoga – learning from the past, acting in the present, and moving into the future. Aadil says “ True yoga is not about the shape of your body, but the shape of your life. Yoga is not to be performed; yoga is to be lived. Yoga doesn’t care about what you have been; yoga cares for the person you are becoming.”
Steve believes breath (pranayama) is primary in yoga. Every movement into and out of a pose as well as the pose itself is an expression of one’s breath. No style of yoga practice is appropriate for every body; however, the practice of yoga is appropriate for everyone. Every practice begins by assessing the availabilities and needs of each student, striving to create a group practice which is accessible, inspiring, and an adventure of self-discovery. The journey on the mat offers us the opportunity to move the practice into everyday life incorporating openness, grace, beauty and passion.
Off of the mat, Steve is one of the stewards of the Living Yoga Center, managing it’s operations through heartsopening, llc, a marketing company owned by he and his wife Sharon, as well as their two children, Amanda and Ian. He is passionate about family and friendships, AcroPlay, landscaping and gardening. He is an independent financial planner with a focus on a client/advisor relationship that is participatory, evolving, balanced and creates a transparent portfolio. He is a co-owner of a patented environmentally friendly oil remediation product which is in testing in both the United States and Canada (RAYBIF.com).
Steve also serves his community as a volunteer hospice caregiver.
