After 30 years of dancing, 8 years of teaching yoga and meditation, and 3 years of training in the Alexander Technique, Jennifer Allen has been a student of how the body moves for most of her life. She moved to NYC from Portland, OR when she was 18, and after receiving a BFA in Dance at NYU, danced professionally both nationally and internationally with several renowned contemporary choreographers. Currently she collaborates with her partner, multi-disciplinary performance artist Deke Weaver on large and small-scale productions about animals heading towards extinction. unreliablebestiary.org
Discovering yoga and meditation in NYC at Jivamukti Yoga, she studied Asanas with Sharon Gannon, David Life and then Cyndi Lee of OM Yoga. She then went to Ananda Ashram in Monroe, NY where she was introduced to the ancient knowledge of Vedanta: studying Sanskrit, Pranayama, Auryveda, Kirtan and Meditation.
Trained to teach Hatha Yoga at Integral Yoga NYC, she has since expanded towards teaching Vinyasa classes well rooted in alignment principles from the Alexander Technique. She is able to give clear and valuable feedback on the physical practice of yoga, as well as weaving in the deeper philosophical and spiritual threads of a yogic practice including Pranayama, Meditation, Mudras, and Chanting.
Moving to Champaign-Urbana in 2005, Jennifer became a Licensed Massage Therapist and a certified practitioner and teacher of Zero Balancing. Zero Balancing is a powerful body-mind therapy that uses skilled touch to address the relationship between energy and structures of the body. Following a simple protocol, the practitioner uses gentle traction on areas of tension in the bones, joints and soft tissues creating fulcrums, or points of balance, around which the body can relax and reorganize.
In addition to teaching her group yoga classes she sustains a body-therapy practice offering Zero Balancing, Alexander Technique, Massage Therapy and Private Yoga lessons. For more information go to jenniferallentherapy.com or contact her at firstname.lastname@example.org
